Robert Omotunde is a Partner, Executive Director, and Chief Investment Officer at MDU Capital, with over 19 years of experience spanning banking, investment research, asset management, and board-level governance. He is a seasoned investment professional with deep expertise across global and domestic financial markets.
Robert began his career at the defunct Intercontinental Bank Plc, where he worked within the Retail and Personal Banking unit. He transitioned into investment research at Meristem Securities Limited, where he was actively involved in macroeconomic analysis as well as equity and fixed income research. He later became Team Lead, Fixed Income Research, coordinating comprehensive tracking and analysis of Nigeria’s fixed income market.
He subsequently joined Afrinvest (first tenure) as Head, Investment Research Strategy, where he covered the banking and consumer goods sectors on the equity side and led fixed income research. During this period, Robert played a pivotal role in transforming Afrinvest’s research capability into a globally competitive platform. Notably, he was instrumental in the development and launch of the Afrinvest Banking Value Index and Afrinvest High Dividend Yield Index, hosted in partnership with the Nigerian Exchange Group. His asset class expertise spans equities, fixed income, currencies, commodities, and derivatives, with depth in fixed income portfolio construction and strategy.
After Afrinvest, Robert served as Head, Investment Research at AIICO Capital Limited, where he was part of the team managing over ₦135 billion in fixed income assets. He later joined Sankore Securities Limited, where he was responsible for managing over ₦30 billion across diversified portfolios covering fixed income, equities, and alternative assets, including commodities and real estate.
Robert returned to Afrinvest (second tenure) as Chief Investment Officer of Afrinvest Asset Management Limited, where he established and led the firm’s investment treasury function. In this role, he oversaw more than US$100 million in assets under management, spanning naira- and dollar-denominated investments across multiple asset classes. He was responsible for investment strategy formulation, asset allocation, portfolio rebalancing in line with Trust Deeds, and performance management. Under his leadership, the firm’s investment performance contributed to revenue growth of over ten times its annual level prior to his exit in June 2025.
Robert is highly skilled in financial modelling, asset valuation, and technical analysis, and is a respected commentator on macroeconomic and financial market developments across both local and international media platforms. He is a SEC-certified Capital Market Operator, an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (Nigeria) and the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (UK), an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and an Authorized Dealing Clerk of the Nigerian Exchange Group.
He holds a First Class Honours degree in Education from the University of Lagos, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics (Distinction) and an M.Sc. in Economics (Distinction) from the same institution. He is currently completing a PhD in Management (Finance) at Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, with research focused on financial globalisation, monetary policy strategies, and exchange rate volatility in emerging and frontier Sub-Saharan African economies. Robert is also an alumnus of the Senior Management Programme (SMP 95) of Lagos Business School and serves as a Non-Executive Director of Norrenberger Securities Limited.
